KSh 1,000 of KPLC tokens buys about 49.0 units (kWh) at current tariffs.
Why token amounts don't convert 1:1 to units
When you buy KPLC tokens, the amount you pay isn't the amount that goes toward electricity. VAT at 16% is deducted first, then a set of regulatory levies, including the fuel energy charge, forex adjustment, inflation adjustment, and levies for EPRA, REP and WARMA, are charged per unit of electricity you use, on top of the base tariff.
Kenya also uses a tiered tariff: the first 100 kWh you consume in a billing period is priced lower per unit than consumption above that threshold, which is why your effective rate per kWh can shift depending on how much you're topping up.
Why do I get fewer units than expected when I buy KPLC tokens?
Part of every token purchase goes to VAT (16%) and several regulatory levies, including the fuel energy charge, forex adjustment, inflation adjustment, EPRA levy, REP levy and WARMA levy, before the remainder is converted into electricity units at the per-kWh tariff.
How many units does KSh 1,000 buy on KPLC?
It depends on current levies and which consumption tier you fall into, since Kenya uses a tiered pricing structure where the first 100 kWh in a period is cheaper per unit than usage above that. Use the calculator above for the exact current figure.
Is there a fixed monthly charge on prepaid tokens?
No, prepaid (token) customers do not pay the standing/fixed monthly charge that postpaid customers pay. The full amount, minus VAT and levies, goes toward units.
