How this calculator works

This is the reverse of a standard PAYE calculation. Because PAYE uses graduated tax bands, you can't simply divide your target net pay by a fixed percentage to find gross salary. Instead, this calculator tests different gross salaries until it finds the one that, after NSSF, SHIF, Housing Levy and PAYE are deducted, lands on your target net pay.

It's built on the same rules as our PAYE calculator , verified for Finance Act 2026, so the two tools always agree with each other.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I need a gross salary calculator instead of a normal PAYE calculator?

If you know what net pay you want to offer an employee, or what take-home pay you need, PAYE deductions make it hard to work backward by hand since the tax bands are non-linear. This calculator finds the exact gross salary that produces your target net pay.

Do employers use this to set salary offers?

Yes, HR teams commonly negotiate on net pay with candidates and then need the corresponding gross figure for payroll and the employment contract.

Is the gross salary shown exact?

It is calculated to within one shilling of your target net pay using the same PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and Housing Levy rules as our main PAYE calculator, so it should match your payslip precisely once run through payroll.
