A KSh 200,000 HELB loan in default for 12 months grows to about KSh 268,000.
Why HELB penalties grow faster than interest
HELB's 4% annual interest rate is genuinely one of the cheapest available in Kenya. What catches many borrowers out is the separate default penalty: a flat KSh 5,000 charged for every month you fail to start or maintain repayment once it becomes due. Because this penalty doesn't scale with your loan size, it can dominate the total far more than the interest itself, especially on smaller loans.
A 2021 High Court ruling extended the in-duplum rule to HELB, meaning combined interest and penalties can never exceed the size of the original loan; this calculator applies that same cap.

Frequently asked questions
What is HELB's interest rate?
HELB charges 4% annual interest on the reducing loan balance from the date of disbursement, one of the lowest lending rates available in Kenya.
How much is the HELB default penalty?
HELB charges a flat KSh 5,000 penalty for every month a borrower fails to comply with repayment once it becomes due, typically one year after completing studies. This penalty is usually far larger than the interest itself.
Is there a limit to how much interest and penalties can grow?
Yes. A 2021 High Court ruling applied the in-duplum rule to HELB, meaning total interest and penalties combined cannot exceed the original principal amount, capping the maximum amount owed at double the original loan.
Does HELB offer penalty waivers?
HELB has periodically run waiver campaigns offering up to 80% off accumulated penalties for borrowers who clear their full outstanding balance during the offer window. Check HELB's official channels for any active waiver programs.
